The Hometowns of the Quattrin and Petris Families:
Zoppola and Sauris
Our Quattrin and Petris ancestors all come from the small farming town of Zoppola, Friuli, about six and a half miles due east of Pordenone and 56 miles northwest of Trieste. The modern population is about 8400. Other Italian roots of the family are mostly in the region around Zoppola, but the Petrises came from the Carnic Alps and the Quattrins came from Austria originally.
The map below shows Friuli in 1573 ce. Zoppola can be seen slightly west-south-west of center, conspicuously marked by its Castle. The amp is a little out of proportion and shows Zoppola to the west of Pordenone when it is in fact to the east.
The Petris family originally came from the town of Sauris in the Carnic Alps. While Sauris is not marked on this map, it lies about half way between Ampezzo and Tolmezzo, the boxed region north of Zoppola. The Petrises did spend several generations in Ampezzo between Sauris and Zoppola. [Note: Enemonzo, where the De Paoli were from, is due east of Ampezzo, but, like Sauris, is not on this map.]
